After an absence of 20 years, Odysseus decides to return
The king has finally returned home, but since he left to fight in the Trojan War, much has changed in his kingdom. This is the third time that Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are in a movie together.
They previously worked together on Emily Brontë’s The English Patient and Wuthering Heights
Focused on immersing the viewer in the multifaceted pain and suffering of Penelope and Odysseus as Odysseus returns home to Ithaca, this treatise seemed to explore quite systematically the challenges many soldiers face when returning from active duty, including PTSD and other issues mental health, reintegration into one’s past life with family and community, and flashbacks of memories and pain experienced and caused, and resulting inner changes that are irreversible. The Return is based on excellent casting to allow the viewer to experience this rollercoaster ride in which the two main characters reach remarkable heights, the latter due to the unique and special resilience of Penelope and Odysseus during this difficult time in their lives, and without the support of the other.
In fact, the two are kept quite separate for most of the build, which only makes the catharsis stronger in the more intense, suspense-like part of the slower-burning film
Fiennes brings his unique style of portraying suffering to this work, a great extension of his wonderful skill set, complemented by the side-by-side depictions of pain and suffering in The Spider and The Affair’s End. Binoche is the perfect choice for Penelope because the audience can be tricked into feeling and hoping that the two will reunite in the same way they were close during The English Patient, and Pasolini uses this to create additional tension in this work for those who memories from an English patient It is vivid.
It’s a great and very relevant work that needs to be experienced!
