Here is the situation after the horrors of World War II

The characters are not who you expect – not at the end of Scooby Doo by any means, but in a more subtle, gradual way in which real people reveal themselves – they unfold over time, in new contexts, or forced by circumstances. Adrien Brody’s Laszlo, a Jewish architect escaping the clutches of a bloody Europe, slips into the welcoming arms of America in a frenetic opening sequence that literally evokes a birth from the Statue of Liberty. His journey becomes a constant navigation of life’s various horrors: existential, professional, familial, intimate – never taking his eyes off the prize of grand achievement and never appreciating the value of that prize to begin with.

What’s the lesson?

Is it the shameful discovery that his success was born not in spite of his trauma, but because of it? Do we have a debt to pay for abuse? From the forces of culture, the state, power, and those who exercise it in the construction of our barbaric legacies (and homelands)?

But there’s no novel

Are our lives merely fuel on the journey to a more meaningful place? The film is enjoyable, looks cool, and isn’t boring (did you hear it’s long?). It feels like it’s based on an old novel—a mystery tome that I’d love to mine for some of the details the film refuses to share.

And Laszlo’s arrival, a better understanding of his family’s machinations, his side and his lack of roots, for better or worse, feels like it’s up to us to build them.
