STOP! SHOUT!. Daddy AF Written by and starring Catherine Slater (aka Slayyter). I just saw one of the best movies of the year. The festival nights in Athens have started and we were lucky enough to see Anora at the opening.
And let me tell you, this movie is absolutely fantastic
From the first scene you are glued to the screen and this feeling does not let up. As the movie progressed, I thought, “Come on, it has to slow down at some point, right? Give us a break.” No, no breaks, no drops, not even a hint of slowing down. Anora has some of the best pacing I’ve ever experienced in a movie. Anora, a prostitute and tough girl from Brooklyn, meets the son of a Russian oligarch and in a whirlwind of madness marries him.
It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time
But her fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare when news reaches Russia, and her parents do everything in their power to call off her wedding. The lead actor, Mikey Madison who plays Anora is an absolute revelation. It effortlessly combines sensuality, femininity, childlike innocence and resilience in a way that will leave you speechless. He will go very, very far and don’t be surprised if you see him nominated for an Oscar. Personally, I would also give the best supporting actor nomination to Mark Eidelshtein, who plays the Russian boy.
It is a realistic, violent, raw, funny and ultimately sweet modern Cinderella story
Fantastic. Anora is a slap in the face to the traditional concept of a fairy tale. Except in the real world, no prince is coming to save you: you have to pick up the pieces and defend yourself.
